I always look at what other teams have offered/recruited players when they commit to Vanderbilt. Maurice Edwards has a lot of offers, but Vanderbilt was his only Power 5 offer. So, why did Maurice Edwards catch the eye of Barton Simmons, Clark Lea, and the rest of this staff?

In an article from Robbie Weinstein on 247Sports.com that question can be answered, “Edwards is currently on his official visit to Vanderbilt and is the first visitor to commit on the spot this June. The 6-foot, 198-pounder recently ran a 4.41-second 40-yard dash at Vanderbilt’s camp — an impressive figure for that size — and received an offer afterward.”

Speed. Speed. Speed. An obvious priority for this team during the 2022 recruiting cycle. Maurice Edwards ran an impressive 40 yard dash, and his straight line speed is great. He also doesn’t go down on first contact and is hard to bring down with a 6′ 198 pound frame. With all those positives, there’s a reason he isn’t a 4-star with multiple Power 5 offers, and I will have to agree with Allen Trieu, 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst, “More of a hard runner with straight-line speed than one that will make a ton of defenders miss with elusiveness”

And keep in mind even with that criticism, Allen projected Maurice Edwards as a power 5 starter and compared him to Tevin Coleman:

I think Maurice has a solid career ahead in black and gold.

Player Comparison: Warren Norman (but probably not WARREN NORMAN if that makes sense. I doubt he comes in and wins SEC Freshman of the year, but running style is similar)

Score: 3

If you want to be impress…. skip to the 1:09 mark in these highlights from Gillespie’s senior season..

At only 5′ 9″ 180lbs, Gillespie has great power, balance, and……… SPEED

Very impressive film, competition is always a question, but the future looks bright at RB with Re’hman Davis coming back, Patrick Smith, Rocko Griffin, and these two guys coming in. I don’t see either playing much next season with the RB position being the only “set” position on the offense and maybe the entire team, but it can never hurt to have quality young depth at running back.

We learned that this season after losing Davis early in the season during the Stanford game.
