The VandyBoys headed up north to Minneapolis, Minnesota to partake in the Cambria College Classic this past weekend. Vanderbilt would go up against three Big Ten teams in Nebraska, Maryland, and Minnesota. The VandyBoys hit a little bit of a bump in the road Friday as they dropped their first game of the series but it was smooth sailing from there on out as the VandyBoys left the hideous playing surface at U.S. Bank Stadium with a 2-1 series win.
Friday, March 3, 2023: Nebraska 5 Vanderbilt 3
Vanderbilt struggled early against the Huskers on Friday as they took the 5-3 loss. Vanderbilt found some early offensive success in the game as they took a 3-1 lead but could not hold on as the Cornhuskers rallied in the eighth.
The bright side of this matchup was that Carter Holton continued to look spectacular. Holton pitched 5 innings and only allowed two runs. Holton finished the outing with 7 strikeouts. There were moments where Holton found himself in suspect situations with runners on the base paths but he showed poise and confidence as he managed to get out of the jam every time.
Transfer RJ Schreck has his coming out party as he blasted two homers in this game, the first being his first of the season. Parker Noland also recorded his first home run of the season.
Saturday, March 4, 2023: Vanderbilt 8 Maryland 7
In the bottom of the 9th on Saturday Vanderbilt looked like they would have their first losing weekend of the season as they trailed Maryland 7-6 in the final inning. But thanks to some late-game heroics, the VandyBoys found a way to come out on top.
To start the 9th, Jack Bulger managed to find his way on base with a walk. Next batter, Calvin Hewett performed the ever ancient, ever new VanderBunt and managed to get aboard safely. Vanderbilt found themselves with two on, no out in the 9th.
Enrique Bradfield Jr. found himself at the plate with the tying run in scoring position. EBJ managed to hit a single and Matthew Polk, a pinch runner for Bulger, scored from second. The VandyBoys were tied 7-7 with Maryland.
After a good day at the plate on Friday, RJ Schreck found himself at the plate with the chance to end the game, and he did just that. Schreck sent a towering shot to left field and it was deep enough that Calvin Hewett could tag up and score the game-winning run. This was the VandyBoy’s first walk-off of the season.
Sunday, March 5, 2023: Vanderbilt 4 Minnesota 0
Death, taxes, and Vanderbilt baseball having stellar pitching. It is something that Vandy fans have come to expect, but still, a combined no-hitter is an impressive feat no matter the opponent.
Greysen Carter, Sam Hliboki, Ryan Ginther, and Nick Moldonado, the Four Lefthanded Horsemen, all had impressive performances as they led the VandyBoys to victory on Sunday. Out of the group, the most impressive was Sam Hliboki. Hilboki struck out 8 batters over 3 2/3 innings and won the Collegiate Baseball Player of the Week.
